Rendell goes to Harrisburg
He was instrumental in changing the image of the city
Ed Rendell became governor of Pennsylvania on the strength of his personality, helped by excellent planning on the part of his team. Listening to Neil Oxman, his media guru, describe the campaign, it easy to understand that this campaign was about the selling of the former mayor's personality and that his agenda, while more substantial than Fisher's, played a secondary role. We tend to agree that Rendell was the more photogenic candidate, that he seemed omnipresent, and that he succeeded by conquering his opponent's county to counteract accusations that he did not appeal to the western part of the state. Rendell overall strategy, Oxman says, was in the end more effective than the dirty tactics of his opponent.
Rendell also won because his previous record as mayor of the state's largest city was proof of his ability to deal with economic problems. But Rendell succeeded as mayor of Philadelphia not merely by solving the economic crisis. Beyond his technical know how and his acumen at recruiting the best available talent, he was instrumental in changing the image of the city from a second rate city to a thriving metropolis, a restaurant Mecca, a backdrop for Hollywood films, a tourist attraction.
Philadelphia became an attractive place to live, and certain neighborhoods felt neglected only because they didn't realize that the number of jobs created in the downtown area contributed indirectly to improve the lives of all the citizens. Rendell points to new school buildings, new business centers and new housing for the Hispanic community as positive contributions of his administration. Street topped him by appointing Hispanics to real positions of power. Rendell has promised to place Hispanics at all level of his state government, and we believe he will keep his promises. Many knowledgeable analysts are saying that Rendell will be on the short list for vice presidential candidates because of his strategic position as governor of one of the most populous states, and his ability to raise funds. It is clearly too soon to make that judgment.
Furthermore, it is our impression that the national party was not exactly enamored of his comments during the Florida debacle, although the mayor was just stating the obvious. He might be controversial, but the Democrats need him, because on the national stage he is a shining star.
What made Ed Rendell a great mayor was his ability to motivate the city and to make its citizens feel better about themselves, proud be live and work in a newly energized city with unmatched historical importance. For the Hispanic community, Rendell's victory in the governor's race means the possibility of more meaningful contributions, more important jobs and a chance to improve the lives of Hispanics in this state. Rendell's record is a positive one that we hope he can bring to state government. Rendel;l's tenure will dictate the direction of state government for the next decade. The Hispanic community which continues to grow in Pennsylvania has a deep interest in making this a successful administration.
Ed Rendell was good for Philadelphia, bringing business to the city and a sense of purpose. We have voted for him in the hope that he can do the same for the state. There is great hope in the air because a majority of the electorate agrees that the new governor has the ability to lead us and a positive vision for the future of Pennsylvania.
